The Cathedral

Manila Cathedral is the first Cathedral in the Philippines that is dedicated to Immaculate Conception, a title for the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is also known to be “The Mother of all Churches, Cathedrals and Basilicas of the Philippines”. It is the premier church of the Philippines since it was chosen to become a Cathedral when the Philippines was separated from the Archdiocese of Mexico and became a new diocese in Manila. The present structure is the eighth reconstructed design by Archt. Fernando Ocampo.

The Shrine has a marble altar piece by the Italian, Giuseppe Persichetti. Angels, sculpted in bronze and engrafted to a gigantic pillar. The detailed statues of some famous saints, with artistic bronze carvings representing its important historical episodes and giving homage to Mary. Beneath the imposing rose-glass window, is the main portal executed in eight bronze panels by Italian sculptors. The center of devotion in the high altar is the bronze image of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. It is truly a remarkable Cathedral to visit.
